What is a Freeholder?

A Freeholder is a legislator on the county level. The Freeholders act as the county's legislative body, much as the U.S. Congress or the State Legislature, giving advice and consent to the actions of the County Executive. Freeholders control what county government can spend.

Freeholder John D. Mitchell was elected to the Board of Chosen Freeholders in November 2010. During his first term in 2011, John served the Board as Chairman Pro Tempore. On January 3rd, 2012 Freeholder Mitchell was unanimously elected by both Republicans and Democrats to serve as Freeholder Board Chairman.
